What is a Pediatric Dentist?
A Pediatric Dentist like Dr. Brown is a specialist dedicated to the oral health of children and the monitoring of their facial growth and development. Our office is designed for treating children from infancy through adolescence, as well as the medically and the physically compromised. In our opinion, taking your child to see a pediatric dental specialist is as important as taking them to see a pediatrician.
What is a Board
Certified Pediatric Dentist?
When a Pediatric Dentist is Board Certified it means that the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry or ABPD certifies that the dental care being provided is based on standards of excellence that lead to high quality oral health care for infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs. Certification by the ABPD provides assurance to the public that a Pediatric Dentist like Dr. Brown has successfully completed accredited training and a voluntary examination process designed to continually validate the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to the delivery of quality patient care.
Establishing Your Child’s Dental Home
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents and other care providers to help every child establish a dental home by 12 months of age. Establishing a dental home provides some key components to dental care for your child including...

Your First Visit
Dr. Brown and his team provide loving dental care to infants, children and teenagers. We treat our patients “like we treat our own kids” The office is set up for children – from the video games in the waiting room, to the televisions above each chair. Our Noah’s Ark themed office is kid friendly. Your child may be seen in the Elephant Chair, or the Alligator Chair, or maybe even the Lion Chair. Your very young child might even be seen in the Cheetah Room. Our goal is to create a fun atmosphere that will set your child at ease. We are a “restraint free” practice. We will not hold your child down. We provide oral sedation and/or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for our anxious patients. We want our children to develop into confident patients that enjoy visiting the dentist. Parents are free to accompany their child through any and all phases of treatment. Dr. Brown is available to answer any questions.
Types of First Visits
Our littlest ones, those typically age three and under, have what we call a lap exam. The child stays in the parent’s lap and the parent leans the child back in Dr. Brown’s lap. He takes a look with a tooth mirror and determines if the child has any cavities. He then addresses any of the parent’s questions or concerns.
The second way children enter our practice is for a new patient cleaning. The child may or may not have been referred. The child’s medical history is taken. The child (and parents) then comes into the back of our office and has their teeth cleaned by one of our dental hygienists. During this time, child is examined by Dr. Brown who checks the teeth, gums and surrounding tissues. If x-rays are needed they are also taken during this time. All of our x-rays are digital and require very minimal amounts of radiation. All patients are also shielded by lead aprons to protect them from any extra radiation. Dr. Brown then addresses any questions or concerns the parents have. Finally a topical fluoride varnish is applied to the child’s teeth.
The third way children enter our practice is if they have “a problem”. At this first appointment their specific issue will be addressed. If the child has an abscessed tooth, an antibiotic and pain medication will be prescribed and an appointment made for a later date, after the antibiotic has cleared up some of the infection. We will then give the tooth to the tooth fairy and place a spacer if needed. Another common problem is permanent teeth coming behind baby teeth. We will evaluate this and proceed accordingly.

Dr. Brown’s team consists of two dental assistants, five dental hygienists, and an administrative team. All team members are current in CPR, OSHA and HIPAA guidelines. They all receive yearly continuing education. Dr. Brown is committed to advancing the opportunities of his staff. “My children started seeing Dr. Brown about 2-3 years. We live in Marshall County, close to the Etowah County line, so it is over an hour drive, but VERY WORTH THE DISTANCE! Wouldn't take our kids anywhere else!”

“This is the dental office for children of all ages. The office is beautiful and sets the tone for a "play area". The office is still sophisticated enough for adults with adult literature for entertainment. The dental assistants are very friendly and the children take well to them as they are called back to the room.Dr Brown comes in after the cleaning to exam the teeth. He is a very friendly Dr and attentive to each patient. Both of my children love the dentist which a great thing to hear. This is a dentist office the children WANT TO GO TO!!!”

In case of a dental emergency please call our main office number for further instructions on how to either reach
Dr. Brown or the pediatric dentist that is taking emergency calls if he is out of town.
For after-hours emergencies or questions, please call our office 256.533.2555 and follow our instructions.
Our office attempts to schedule appointments at your convenience and when time is available. Preschool children should be seen in the morning because they are fresher and we can work more slowly with the child for their comfort. School children with a lot of work to be done should be seen in the morning for the same reason. Dental appointments are an excused absence. Missing school can be kept to a minimum when regular dental care is continued.
Please make every effort to keep scheduled appointments. Once an appointment is scheduled, it is considered confirmed. If an appointment needs to be rescheduled, a 24 hour notice is appreciated.
Our office is committed to helping you maximize your insurance benefits.
We are happy that you have dental insurance for your child. Since there are many insurance companies and they all cover at different rates, it is very confusing for the dental office and the parent to know what insurance will actually pay. To keep things as simple as possible and less confusing, our office policy is to charge the same fee to all patients so it is as fair as possible.
We will accept payment from your insurance company, but insurance usually only pays a portion of the cost. We will give you an estimate of your portion based on our experience working with your company. This means that after your insurance has paid, you may be required to pay an additional payment or you may receive a refund.
